Disaster Strikes

Sometimes #@&! just happens.

Like when we came home last week to find our previously tidy and organized bedroom closet like this:

Yes, the solid wood clothing rod snapped completely in half.

Which may or may not have had something to do with the fact that I had crammed as many clothes as possible into that teeny-tiny space (notice the absence of "we" in that sentence? Yeahh...).

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, right? Bring on the closet remodel!

Have you guys ever taken a disasterous situation and used it to your advantage? Ever come home to something that just makes you stop dead in your tracks? Have you done your own (or even a friends'!) closet remodel and have any advice or tips for us? We'd love to know!

  1. Oh boy. That sucks! We have put closet organizers in almost every closet, except the master bedroom of course because we haven't gotten to that room yet. We used the wire organizers from Home Depot. We love that they are adjustable and have so many options. There are different shelf widths as well as accessories like drawers too! We have found after putting organizers in the closet we can get EVEN MORE stuff in them. Good luck and happy organizing!

  2. I am not a big fan of the wire organizers, especially when the wooden ones are similarly priced and available just about everywhere. My one and only closet makeover to date was for our walk-in master, but I think some of the concepts can easily be modified for the size of yours. Sauder HomeVisions (the brand we used) is no longer sold at Lowe's, but you can still find it at afo.com. What I especially loved about the sauder website is that you can use their closet visualizer with the exact dimensions of your closet. I recommend just playing around with it for a little while to see what kind of layout would work best for you, then go find similar pieces at Home Depot or Lowe's. A busted closet is a great opportunity for a fun and unexpected paint color too! Looking forward to your updates on this!

  3. that sucks. Something similar just happened to my laundry room. I will be posting pictures on my blog tonight.

In my bedroom closet, I use the wire shelving that they sell at Home Depot, which adds a ton of space and is an easy DIY project. I learned that you can buy the shelving pieces for way cheap at stores like the Habitat for Humanity Restore. But, before you check out the pieces - go to homedepot's site and make a design here - www.homedepot.com/closetmaid

  4. "Have you guys ever taken a disastrous situation and used it to your advantage?" Well, I kinda had my house catch on fire, which has led to some major remodeling. And that's including closets.

I actually prefer the wire systems for closets with doors because they don't catch dust, but if yours is open, and it appears to be, go for a system that will add to your room's appeal. Whatever you guys do, I know it will be gorgeous.

  5. Oh what a drag!! Too many clothes?? :)

We've had a disaster, the washer (located on the 3rd floor of our townhome) hose burst and leaked through all three levels in the middle of the night. We woke up to soggy carpeting and a fairly large disaster.

We were able to redo the house after the damage so I guess that was a good thing, though of course, not planned.

We used the Ikea interior fitting when we redid our daughter's room and they've been great. So many options. Can't wait to do mine!

  6. Wow! Such great comments today, totally makes my day. :) And it looks like 90% of you guys DID have a minor (or rather a MAJOR) disaster and used it to revamp something for the better.

Thanks also to you guys who threw out some awesome tips and advice - I had no idea you could even design a closet system online! I checked one site out, but go figure - our closet isn't a standard size, it's not even 5' wide (the smallest size on the site). Oh well, we'll figure something out!

Oh, and the closet does actually have doors - we had just removed them to showcase the extensive damage (that and the avalanche of clothes sorta threw them out of whack, too!). But, in true Magruder DIY style, we will be replacing the doors, too, and of course keeping you guys updated on our progress.

    So - Lemonade, anyone?

  9. I have a very simple solution...your hubby needs to build you a carrie bradshaw closet! (i believe every woman should have one of those) Right now my closet is stuffed with stuff but when we move into the apartment im going to make it to the most welcome and organized closet possible! number one rule? catagorize!
